Most apple trees need plenty of cold weather before they can set fruit, which warm climates simply canâ€TMt offer. But thereâ€TMs a rare exception â€" the Dorsett Golden Apple (Malus domestica ‘Dorsett Goldenâ€TM). Whether you live in the Deep South, Florida, or Southern California, you can grow this apple tree and harvest a heavy crop of sweet summer apples each year with as few as 100 to 200 chill hours per year! The Dorsett Golden Apple tree was first discovered growing in the Bahamas, where it abundantly produced apples! If an apple tree is productive in the hot tropical environment of the Bahamas, you know it can also bear fruit in your warm climate. Relatively unknown to most backyard gardeners, the Dorsett Golden Apple tree actually has quite a long-standing track record. It was way back in 1954 that Mrs. Irene Dorsett found the original tree, which was subsequently named for her, growing in her orchard in Nassau, New Providence Island, Bahamas. Recommended by Numerous UniversitiesAfter testing 43 different types of apple trees, the University of Florida recommends only three types that can successfully produce apples in the hot climates across Florida, and the Dorsett Golden Apple is one of them. (The Anna Apple tree, which we also offer, is another one of the recommended cultivars.) Texas A&M recommends only two types of trees for apple production in Texas â€" Dorsett Golden and Anna. And the University of Arizona also recommends Dorsett Golden as an apple tree that produces fruit even in the desert regions of that state. Pick a Perfect Pair of Apple TreesBreathtakingly beautiful apple blossoms are more than “just a pretty face,†although you will truly fall in love with this tree when itâ€TMs in full bloom! When the flowers fade, the fruit production begins. But the flowers must be fertilized by pollen before the fruit can form. To accomplish this, an apple tree depends on a companion tree that contributes pollen for fertilizing the flowers.
